AN elderly woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Karamdadi village of Amreli on Wednesday with her family members claiming she was killed by a leopard but forest officials denied this prima facie.
The incident took place in Karamdadi village of Dhari taluka in Amreli district. Police said victim Mithi Wadhwani (95)who was sleeping in her home was found dead by her family members on Wednesday morning. Her son Hitesh told Dhari police that she was attacked and killed by a wild animal like leopard.
However, local forest officers and veterinarians, after visiting the scene of the incident, claimed that the woman was not killed by any wild animal.
“There were no pugmarks of a leopard near the spot the woman was found dead. Nor were there any blood stains on her body or clothes which usually we find in the case of a leopard attack. The injury marks on body seemed to have been caused by wild cats or mouse after the death of the woman,” an officer of Gir East division who made site visit said on the condition of anonymity.
The officer, however, added that the cause of the woman’s death will be known only after doctors perform an autopsy. “Claim of compensation to her family will depend on the post-mortem report. Since this is a suspicious case, we have requested the police to investigate it,” the officer further added.
Police said home of the victim is located on the fringes of the village which is located near Karamdadi forest. Dhari police have registered a case of accidental death and started further investigation.
