A woman from Kapurthala on Wednesday alleged that she had been illegally detained by the city police on Monday (August 26) along with her son and domestic help. In a press conference here, the woman,Balbir Kaur, alleged that the Station House Officer (SHO) at the Kapurthala city police station,Bharat Masih Ladhar, led the police team which raided her house on the evening of August 26. Kaur says she was at home with her two children and 16-year-old maid when the police arrived and alleged that they then took all of them to the police station and only let them off after 24 hours on the evening of August 27.

She demanded action against those who had ‘illegally’ detained her. “They were asking about my husband Amarjit,a property dealer, and searched the entire house,” she said before adding that police did not give her reasons for the search.

Police sources, however, revealed that police wanted to question Amarjit for a murder that had taken place around a month back in Kapurthala city. SHO Bharat Masih Ladhar said that police suspected that Amarjit had played a role in the death of another property dealer, who was chased and killed outside his house by 8-9 people.

“We went to raid the place to pick him but he was not there and then we questioned his wife about his whereabouts,” the SHO said before adding that police questioned her for only around two hours at her residence and that a woman personnel had accompanied the team.

He also said that call details established a link between Amarjit and the killers.
