Wheat procurement: Thomas happy with Punjab’s preparedness

Union Minister of State K V Thomas on Wednesday expressed satisfaction over storage facilities for wheat in Punjab.

Speaking to reporters,Thomas,who was in Amritsar to pay a visit to Attari Integrated Check Post (ICP),said the state food secretary had briefed him about the preparedness of the state machinery to handle the ensuing Rabi season.

“State procuring agencies as well as FCI are fully geared up to meet the challenges. The secretary also brought to my attention the issue of supply of gunny bags. I have assured the state government that necessary quantity of both jute as well PP bags will be made available to the state well in time,” Thomas said.

“Punjab is the food grain bowl of country,supplying the highest quantity of both rice and wheat. The production and procurement of wheat this year,I am told will be to the tune of 175 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) and 140 LMT,respectively. Procurement of 140 LMT will be nearly 12 Lakh more than that of last year,” he added.
