Notorious gangster Sandeep Chitana, who also figures in the most wanted list of several state police forces, was shot dead by the Sonepat Crime Branch in an encounter on the Jind-Narwana highway late Wednesday.

He was taken to a nearby hospital in an injured state, where he succumbed. Sandeep was wanted by the police in Haryana,Delhi and Rajasthan in around 25 cases of murders, extortions, dacoity and attempt to murder. He was also carrying cash rewards of lakhs of rupees on his arrest.

According to a tip-off received by Sonepat Crime Branch incharge Rattan Singh,Sandeep was hiding in Jind district’s Narwana area and was to reach Rohtak on Wednesday evening.

Three Crime Branch teams were constituted and a checkpost was set up at the Narwana-Jind highway. When Sandeep reached the checkpost, the police signalled him to stop, but he opened fire and fled. When the police team chased him and tried to stop his car,he again opened fire.

“Following this, the police retaliated. Sandeep sustained bullet injuries and stopped his car. He was caught and rushed to civil hospital in Uchhana, where he died. From his car,the police have recovered a 9 mm pistol,a .32 bore revolver and a few cartridges,” a Sonepat district police officer.

In 2005,Sandeep was arrested by the Delhi Police after a four-hour encounter in a residential colony in northwest Delhi. However,he was released on bail after a couple of years.

Last year,Sandeep and his accomplice Neetu had escaped from Haryana Police’s custody while they were being produced in court in connection with a murder case.
