Uttarakhand again: flash flood kills 6

The weather department has predicted light to moderate rain over the next three days in Uttarakhand.

Six persons, including two children and three women, were killed in a flash flood in Navthana village in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district in the early hours Thursday. Twelve houses houses were hit by the flash flood. The bodies recovered so far include those of Magani Devi, 52, Mangaleshwari Devi, 36, Lachhu Devi, 56, Ritika, 13, and Bebu, 10, while Rakesh Nautiyal is missing. A rescue team was rushed to the site from Tehri Thursday morning. CISF jawans, members of the local disaster mitigation unit and fire brigade units were involved in rescue operations.

In a separate incident, a woman was killed after a piece of rock from a hill fell on her in Bakoli village in Uttarkashi. Several roads were blocked due to constant rains in the past two days, including 33 rural roads in Chamoli district. Debris has blocked the Rishikesh-Badrinath road (NH-58) at Lambagad and Lagashu. The Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway is also blocked at various points, including Netala, Malla, Laldang, Bishanpur and Chadethi. The Border Roads Organisation is at work on all these places.

The rivers Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi district, Saryu and Gomti in Bageshwar district, and Ganga in Hardwar are as of now flowing below the danger mark. The weather department has predicted light to moderate rain over the next three days in Uttarakhand. It has also predicted thundershowers at a few places.
