UNDERTRIALS ransacked Hoshiarpur District Jail on Monday afternoon while four prisoners, accused of supplying drugs to inmates, were being transferred to Kapurthala Modern Jail.

The jail authorities had to fire in the air to control the undertrials, who went on rioting for nearly two hours, demanding that the four prisoners be returned to Hoshiarpur. The inmates, some of whom sustained injuries, pelted stones at the jail officials and damaged properties.

Jail Superintendent B S Gill, who had assumed office five days ago, said: “I found that some inmates were supplying drugs in jail. They needed to be shifted to some other jail. I took the permission from the DGP to transfer them to Kapurthala Modern Jail. Today, when they were being transferred, other inmates started ransacking jail property.”

Following the incident, heavy police force has been deployed in the jail. Later, the four inmates were shifted to the Kapurthala jail.

Hoshiarpur SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill, who rushed to the spot, said: “We will register a case after getting a complaint from the jail authorities.” Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam has ordered SDM Karnail Singh to hold a judicial probe into the matter.
