Two persons were shot dead late on Tuesday outside a polytechnic college in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh when they objected to a ragging incident which had taken place a day earlier. The victims have been identified as Anshul Kaushik (24) and Keshav Pachauri (22), both former students of Murlidhar Gajanand Government Polytechnic College, IG (STF) Sujit Pandey told reporters.
The two had protested against the alleged humiliation of Anshul’s brother Rishabh Kaushik in the name of ragging by a third year student, identified as Abhishek Yadav, on the campus on Monday. Rishabh is a second-year student of the institute.
The victims suffered two gunshots each, police said, adding that a .9mm pistol, which is a prohibited bore, was used in the crime.
Police Wednesday arrested proctor Banke Lal and second-year student Sohan Pal who were named in a murder case lodged by the families of the deceased. However, prime accused Abhishek and his two unidentified associates are absconding.
Superintendent of Police (SP), Hathras, Deepika Tiwari said they are probing if something else other than ragging led to the murders.
SHO, City Kotwali police station, Arun Kumar Singh said Abhishek and his associates allegedly misbehaved and humiliated Rishabh publicly on Monday in the name of ragging. Rishabh later lodged a complaint with college proctor Banke Lal. Rishabh, who comes from Radha Gully locality near the college, also informed his brother Anshul.
Rishabh claimed the proctor scolded him for lodging the complaint and did not take any action allegedly because Abhishek is the proctor’s relative, the SHO added.
Circle Officer, City, Brijendra Singh said that around 8:15 pm on Tuesday Anshul and his friend Keshav were attending a cultural event at Delhi Chowk crossing when Abhishek and his associates arrived there. Anshul reportedly had a heated exchange with Abhishek over the ragging incident.
The argument turned into a scuffle between the two and Abhishek allegedly fired at Anshul and Keshav. While he escaped from the scene, the injured victims were rushed to the hospital where doctors declared them dead, the CO added.
