A truck driver disrupted a family’s alleged suicide attempt after he jumped into a canal and rescued a woman and two of her children at Ellenabad in Haryana on Tuesday. The woman’s husband, however, was washed away and is yet to be traced.

Police said that Ellenabad-based confectionery shop keeper Virender had allegedly decided to commit suicide along with his wife Mamta and their children – Sahil and Sania According to police,Virender had been mentally disturbed for the past few days due to financial trouble and on Tuesday evening,he took Mamta and their children to Talwara lake on his motorbike. After roaming there for a few minutes, they all started walking on the banks of Rajasthan canal when Virender allegedly pushed Mamta and the two children into the canal before jumping in himself. “Hearing the screams of the children and the woman,a villager who was working in his fields nearby tried to rescue them. He threw a tractor rope into the water and raised an alarm. A truck driver who was sleeping in his vehicle parked beside the canal also heard the screams. He jumped in and managed to save Mamta and her children. Virender, however, was washed away and is believed to be dead. We are trying to locate his body,” an investigating officer said.

Mamta and her children were then taken back to their home by people who had gathered at the spot. As per the preliminary police inquiry,Virender’s family members have allegedly told police that he was suffering from a financial crunch and was thus mentally disturbed for the past few days.
