The decision to of the Mamata Banerjee-led government to compensate women victims of crimes has been slammed by ally Congress and Opposition CPM alike.

Both the parties on Friday termed the government’s move to compensate to the tune of Rs 2 lakh to the family in case of death of a women due to torture or any other crime as “insulting” and “denigratory” to the women of the state.

“The government seems to have taken it for granted that atrocities against women will not be stopped in Bengal. Can the government not give a guarantee that no atrocities against women will take place in the state?” said Congress leader Abdul Mannan.

“The move raise few questions. There is lack of clarity in the process of compensating the victims. What will happen if a fake complaint is lodged? Which one is the primary objective of the government? Is it to stop the atrocities on women or provide financial support to victims?” he added.

The CPM,too, accused the government of shirking its responsibility from providing security to women. “A responsible government should first ensure that there will be no atrocities against women. This is why I think the decision is denigratory to women” said CPM state Committee member Amitava Nandi.

Women Development and Social Welfare Minister Sabitri Mitra brushed aside the allegations that government funds could be misused by the scheme. “There is no scope of any misuse of government fund. A panel headed by DM will probe the allegations and compensation will be given on the basis of their recommendation,” Mitra said.
