At a time when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been alleging an “international Communist-Maoist conspiracy” to eliminate her,the state police is set to acquire for the first time MP5 series submachine guns of German make for her security and for those of other VIPs in her Cabinet.

The acquisition of the powerful short-range combat weapon reportedly follows assessment by state and central governments of threat to Mamata, particularly after the killing of top Maoist leader Kishenji. A retaliation by the Maoists is very much feared, say top state home department officials. Police also believe the Maoists have set up base in Kolkata and other urban areas.

The state home department put in a request for about 150 MP-5 submachine guns, and the Union Home Ministry readily cleared it. Imported through central police forces, these will be handed over to the state soon,a senior police officer confirmed.

The Heckler & Koch MP5 is a 9 mm submachine gun of German make and design. It is currently one of the most widely used submachine guns in the world, purchased by military, law enforcement, intelligence and security organisations.

The security at the West Bengal secretariat,Mamata’s residence and for her convoy is also being upgraded.
