Tension prevailed in Jaintipur on Monday with two armed groups nearly entering into a clash.

Tension started brewing after one Amritpal Singh and his supporters reportedly observed a dharna demanding registration of case against former zila parishad chairman Rajinder Kumar Pappu, his relatives and others for allegedly beating him and hurting his religious sentiments.

According to Amritpal,he was beaten up for renting out a shop without informing Pappu.

The situation was brought under control only after the police registered a case against Pappu’s son,his nephew and over 30 others. The case was registered under sections 323,341 and 295 A of the IPC.

When contacted,Kathunangal SHO Preetinder Singh said Pappu had not been named in the FIR. “Pappu was in Dubai at the time of the alleged incident. It has been alleged that Amritpal was beaten at Pappu’s behest. Investigations are on,” he added.

Asked how armed people were roaming about freely,Singh said: “The situation was very volatile and the police were trying to pacify them. Both sides had weapons. We are inquiring into it and appropriate action will be taken.”
