External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will visit Myanmar on Friday to attend conferences of ASEAN and East Asian countries besides holding scheduled bilateral meetings with her counterparts from these countries.

However, she may not be able to meet Myanmar’s iconic leader Aung San Suu Kyi, since the minister will be in Nay Pyi Taw and the Nobel laureate will be in Yangon at that time, MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin indicated on Wednesday.

Swaraj will attend three multilaterals — the 12th annual India-ASEAN Foreign Ministers meet, the ministerial conference of East Asia Summit (EAS) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), he said. These will be Swaraj’s first participation in multilateral fora since assuming charge as the External Affairs Minister in May.
