The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to tribal teacher Soni Sori in connection with the Essar-Maoists payoffs case. Sori was accused to receiving money on behalf of Maoists from the Essar Group.
Sori has been acquitted in all other cases except the Essar-Maoists payoff case. Sori was in jail when her mother died in 2012. Her husband and co-accused Anil Futane reportedly succumbed to injuries he sustained in jail days after he was acquitted in August, 2013.
Essar is alleged to have paid protection money to Maoists, and Sori is alleged to have acted as conduits.
More details are awaited.
The court said that since the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2013, has come into force, there is no need for the court to issue any direction to comply with the law.
