The owner of a coaching class in Ambernath was arrested on Thursday morning for leaking the algebra paper of the SSC Std X exam in Mumbai. Examinees were scheduled to start the three-hour paper — the sixth paper of the SSC exams that began on March 2 — at 11.30 am.

42-year-old Firoz Khan, the owner of Brilliant Coaching Class, was allegedly planning to distribute the answer key to his students.

“We got a tip-off call from an unknown number. Our officials rushed to the coaching class and seized a question paper from Khan. We informed board officials who confirmed it was the paper scheduled for today,” Shivshankar Munde, senior police inspector of Ambernath police station, said.

Munde said Khan had revealed that he got the paper from Mukund Bhor,a son of the owner of Bhor Vidyalaya,a nearby school. Bhor, who is also a teacher at the vidyalaya,is absconding.

Laxmikant Pande, chairman of the Mumbai division of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, said the leak was really an attempt at “mass copying”.

“This is just one case where a school teacher supplied the question paper to the coaching class. The coaching class owner tried to forward it to students of his class along with the answers. It cannot be called a leak; it was an attempt at mass copying which was foiled by police,” Pande said.

He added that the board was not thinking of a re-exam as the paper was not circulated elsewhere. “We will write to the education department and ask them to cancel the recognition of the school.”
