Police on Sunday arrested dismissed police constable Veerpal Yadav, who is accused of kidnapping and raping a minor girl at Musajhag police station in Badaun district on December 31.
The constable had been absconding since the incident.
Vijay Singh Meena, IG, Bareilly Zone, said Veerpal was arrested from near a bus stand in Bareilly. He said the dismissed constable told the police that he threw his phone in a drain after the incident and abandoned his car near Tundla in Firozabad.
Meena said a team has been sent to Tundla to locate the car, which was allegedly used to kidnap the girl. He said Veerpal stayed in Bareilly and Shahjahanpur for a few days after the incident, but later moved to Rajasthan and Delhi. He was arrested when he came to Bareilly and it appears he was going to Badaun to meet his lawyer, Meena said.
The co-accused in the case, dismissed constable Avnish Yadav, was arrested by the police from Bareilly on January 5.
The two constables are accused of kidnapping the 16-year-old girl from outside her house on New Year’s Eve and taking her to Veerpal’s residence inside Musajhag police station premises, where she was allegedly raped.
The victim was dropped near her village by the constables after the alleged sexual assault. An FIR was lodged against the constables on January 1 and police said the medical examination of the victim confirmed sexual assault.
