Scientist Mashelkar, yoga guru B K S Iyengar get Padma Vibhushan

Union minister Sharad Pawar’s brother Pratap Govindrao Pawar, owner of Sakal newspaper group, has also been named for Padma Shri.

RENOWNED scientist and former CSIR chief Dr R A Mashelkar and yoga guru B K S Iyengar have been chosen for this year’s Padma Vibhushan award, as first reported by The Indian Express.

Actor Kamal Haasan, Tamil lyricist V R Thevar, novelist Anita Desai, tennis player Leander Paes, author Ruskin Bond, classical singer Parveen Sultana, badminton player-turned-coach Pullela Gopichand, Justice Dalveer Bhandari, political scientists Lloyd Rudolph and Sussane H Rudolph are among the 25 people who have been awarded Padma Bhushan.

Former Chief Justice of India J S Verma and Dr Narendra Achyut Dabholkar have been awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri respectively, both posthumously.

Cricketer Yuvraj Singh, cine stars Paresh Rawal and Vidya Balan, sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik, theatre artist Bansi Kaul neurologist Sunil Pradhan, oncologist Rajesh Grover, vascular surgeon Thenumgal Poulose Jacob, fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, artist Paresh Maity, cinematographer Santosh Sivan, Prof (Dr) Indra Chakravarty, poet Ashok Chakradhar, oncologist and US based author Siddharth Mukherjee, Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh are among the 101 people selected for this year’s Padma Shri.

Among other sportspersons who have been selected for Padma Shri are squash player Dipika Pallikal, former Indian women’s cricket captain Anjum Chopra, Sunil Dabas (kabaddi), Love Raj Singh Dharmshaktu (mountaineering), H Boniface Prabhu (wheelchair tennis) and Mamta Sodha (mountaineering).
