Reacting to the Supreme Court verdict that allowed Tamil Nadu to increase the storage level at Mullaperiyar dam, the Kerala assembly Monday sought the Centre’s mediation to reach a consensus between the states on the new dam. Also, the assembly urged the President to refer the issue to the SC under Article 143 of the Constitution, considering the threat the dam posed to 40 lakh people in the downstream. The assembly unanimously adopted a motion moved by CM Oommen Chandy. The motion said increasing the water level would lead to the extinction of flora and fauna, so the Centre should ensure that forest and environmental laws are strictly adhered to.
