Row erupts over cops’ arrest

A day after an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a head constable,deputed at the Punjab IG (traffic) office in Chandigarh,were arrested for alleged robbery,a row erupted between the IG (traffic) S S Chauhan and the Ludhiana police on Tuesday.

A day after an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a head constable,deputed at the Punjab IG (traffic) office in Chandigarh,were arrested for alleged robbery,a row erupted between the IG (traffic) S S Chauhan and the Ludhiana police on Tuesday.

ASI Amar Singh,head constable Rajinder Singh along with one Angrej Singh were arrested by the Ludhiana police on Monday for allegedly robbing Rs 35 lakh of a Mumbai-based diamond trader on October 15.

On Tuesday,however,an angry IG (traffic) S S Chauhan hit out at the Ludhiana poli”e. “The employees were not working in my office at all. The entire episode need to be investigated and there is a deep controversy to malign my name in this issue,” he said. Using abusive language against the Ludhiana police,Chauhan categorically denied that the ASI and the constable were part of his office and added that using the name of his office was not justified.

The Ludhiana police,on the other hand,are standing by their investigations. ADCP Harmohan Singh,who along with his team,had solved the case,said: “We have proof against the culprits and we stand by”it.” He added that Amar Singh was working as a telephone operator in the IG’s office.

Meanwhile,sources confirmed that the issue has reached the office of state DGP Sumedh Saini.

Police are also on the lookout for to other accused,Malkiat Singh and Manpreet Singh. As per police investigations,the trio were caught on the basis of CCTV footage obtained from a camera installed outside a house on Ludhiana’s Mall Road,near which,the victim was robbed.
