Members of a family were set on fire while they were sleeping early Thursday at Jattanwali village in Ferozepur,resulting in the death of three persons and injury to another three.
The attackers poured petrol on the victims and set them on fire around 3.30 am.
The owner of the house,Balwant Singh,who sustained 70 per cent burns,blamed his distant relative Lakhwinder Pal Singh for the attack.
The police have registered an FIR against Lakhwinder,Mohan Lal,Mandeep Singh and two other identified persons on Balwants statement.
While Balwants mother Bachan Kaur (70) and teenager daughters Jasbir and Satbir died in the attack,he,his wife Veerpal Kaur and son Sukhpreet Singh (10) have been admitted to Baghi hospital in Ferozepur with injuries.
According to Balwant,a few persons,along with Lakwinder,entered inside their house and set them on fire. The family was rushed to the hospital by neighbours.
Meanwhile,Deputy Commissioner Manjeet Singh Narang has ordered a judicial probe into the incident and announced free treatment for the injured. Lakhwinder used to live in the same lane as Balwant but two years ago,he had shifted to Sultanpur Lodhi. He had a strained relationship with the family, said a police officer.
