Five jawans were killed and one injured when a soldier, Ranveer Singh, fired indiscriminately on his colleagues before killing himself around 3 am Thursday inside the Battalion headquarters of Army’s 3 sector Rashtriya Rifles at Safapora in Ganderbal district.

The Army has ordered a court of inquiry to ascertain the reasons for the incident, a defense spokesperson said, adding, “the incident took place during the intervening night of February 26-27.” He did not elaborate on it.

The 13 Rashtriya Rifles battalion headquarters is part of the Army’s 3 sector headquarters camp located on the banks of Mansbal Lake. Officials said Singh was on night duty at the main entrance sentry bunker, which overlooks the Srinagar-Bandipore main highway. Officials said at 2.45 am, the soldier disembarked from the sentry post and went inside the guard room, where he had an altercation with another jawan who was supposed to relieve him.

After the altercation, the soldier indiscriminately fired on the jawans, killing four of them. He then went to another room and shot dead the fifth soldier, before killing himself near the sentry post. The deceased have been identified as Constables Rahul Mitra, Amit Kumar, Surender Singh, M D Ansari and Naik Jani Rajpoot. The police have lodged an FIR into the case.
