Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has called up Hashim Ansari — the oldest litigant in the Babri Masjid demolition case — to assure him that his desire to meet Narendra Modi will be conveyed to the Prime Minister.

Rajnath was in Lucknow on Saturday to visit his adopted village, but had not spoken much when asked about the Ansari’s desire to withdraw from the Babri Masjid case.

“Rajnath Singhji had called up on Saturday. He asked about abba’s health,” Iqbal Ansari, son of Hashim Ansari said. Iqbal added that Singh assured that Ansari’s intention to ensure a peaceful solution to the Babri Masjid case will be communicated to Modi.

“Abba had told him that whenever there is a meeting with Modi, the issue of punishment to those who demolished Babri Masjid will be taken up,” he said.

The same day, Jai Shanker Pandey — district president of the Samajwadi Party in Faizabad — too met Ansari and made him speak to party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav over phone. “Mulayam too had inquired about his health,” Iqbal said.
