Punjab: Over 14% sarpanchs elected unopposed

More than 14 per cent of sarpanchs in Punjab have been elected unopposed while over 26 per cent of the seats of panchs have been filled without a contest.

More than 14 per cent of sarpanchs in Punjab have been elected unopposed while over 26 per cent of the seats of panchs have been filled without a contest. According to the figures released by the Punjab state election commission here on Wednesday,27,759 candidates are left in the fray for 13,080 sarpanch seats across the state while over one lakh candidates are in the fray for 81,412 panch seats.

Among the districts,the largest number of sarpanch candidates in fray are in Gurdaspur — 3,000 candidates are fighting for 1,300 seats. In Patiala,another 2,248 sarpanch candidates are in the fray for 1,007 seats and in Ferozepur 2,263 candidates are vying for 818 seats. In Amritsar over 2,000 candidates are fighting for 308 seats. The largest number of panch candidates in the fray are from Gurdaspur (12901) followed by Amritsar (10807) and Ludhiana (8562).

Till now,as many as 1717 sarpanchs have been declared elected unopposed while 21,251 panchs have been declared as having won. The largest number of unopposed sarpanchs declared elected are from Gurdaspur district (214) followed by Patiala (198) and Jalandhar (177). Among the panchs the highest number of unopposed winners are from Hoshiarpur (2404) followed by Jalandhar (2283) and Ludhiana (2067).
