The Punjab government Friday said its proposed industrial investment and the real-estate policy, expected to be launched later this month, will have a 10 per cent quota for the NRIs.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said,”The government has evolved a comprehensive plan to make NRIs equal partners in the industrial progress of the state and a 10 per cent quota of projects and plots is being reserved for Punjabi diaspora.”

Accompanied by NRI affairs minister Bikram Singh Majithia,Sukhbir reviewed schemes promised to the diaspora in the two day NRI sammelan held at Chandigarh and Jalandhar in January this year.

Sukhbir said that based on the demand of Punjabi diaspora keen to invest in the state, the new Industrial Investment Policy will have 10 per cent quota in industrial plots for them. Similarly, all new colonies of PUDA,GMADA and other urban development agencies will also have 10 per cent quota in residential plots for NRIs.

Sukhbir said he was satisfied that all departments of the Punjab Government have worked unitedly to fulfil most promises made to NRIs.

However,he expressed concern over fraudulent marriages involving NRIs and said that they are being dealt with firm hand.

Sukhbir said that Punjab is the first state in the country that has made registration of marriages by NRIs mandatory and the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act-2012 has been notified and district authorities have been instructed to ensure its total compliance.

“To check their (NRIs) harassment, the registration authority of marriages has been delegated to District Revenue Officers,Tehsildars,Naib Tehsildars, whosoever is available in the office,” he said.

Appreciating the decision of notifying The Punjab Human Smuggling Act,to check frauds by illegal travel agents,he said that he has issued strict instructions to Punjab Police to launch a concerted drive against such agents,so that they could not destroy the life of innocent youth.

Meanwhile,Majithia informed the Deputy Chief Minister that state government has taken a path breaking decision,in which an NRI can get a tenant evicted from multiple properties, multiple times. He said that earlier he was allowed only once for a single property. He informed that similar amendment was also been effected for Rural Properties also.

Majithia said,a state government undertaking,PESCO,will provide professionally trained ex-servicemen to guard the properties of NRIs in Punjab,on a nominal payment.

Indian-Americans applaud Punjab govt for new scheme for NRIs

Washington: The Indian-American community has welcomed the Punjab government’s announcement of 10 per cent quota in housing and industrial plots for NRIs in the state. Chahal, however, rued that the state government has not been helpful in delivering justice to NRIs and their families in property disputes. “As a result of which most of the Overseas Punjabi Community members are running from pillar to post to get justice,” he said. Chahal said the overseas Punjabi community is very much concerned for its security of lives and property in the state and the government should create safe and secure atmosphere for NRIs to attract investment in Punjab.
