In a major financial relief to policemen, the state government has decided to set up a special investigation fund of Rs 15 crore for the financial year 2013-14.
The move will help policemen who had to shell out money from their own pockets for petty expenses while investigating cases. There had also been complaints that policemen would ask complainants to fund their expenses while investigating their complaints.
Investigating officers fund all the expenses that come with a case. They are not compensated by the state government. We have therefore decided to set up a special investigation fund of Rs 15 crore for this financial year. Officers who have spent money can file their claims and get reimbursement through this fund, said a senior state government official.
Officers investigating a case can now claim travel allowance, daily allowance as well as miscellaneous expense through this fund.
The need to set up a special investigation fund was raised for the first time in the meeting of chief ministers on internal security called by the Prime Minister. The then home minister had directed the police in various states to set up an investigation fund similar to that set up by the Karnataka government.
