A man who claims to be a national-level boxer was recently arrested in connection with a string of daytime burglaries in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Panchakshari Swami (25) was arrested with aides Rehan-ul Haq (23) and Mayank Sagar (44) by Mumbai Crime Branch last week.

“The trio would break into houses during the day and steal valuables. Swamy claims he is a former boxer who became addicted to alcohol due to bad company and turned to crime,” said DCP (crime) Shrikant Pathak,Navi Mumbai.

Maharashtra Boxing Association, however, refuted the claim and said Swamy had made a similar claim when he was arrested a few months ago for stealing cameras.

Jay Kowli,Boxing Association president, said: “Swamy claims to be a boxer everytime he is caught but there is no record of him ever having boxed. He also claims to have taken part in competitions in Bangalore, but we found this to be false. He had tricked police the last time with similar claims.” Navi Mumbai police have recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 52 lakh from the trio and claimed to have solved three cases.
