‘Godman’ Sant Rampal arrested by police inside Hisar ashram; moved to Chandigarh in an ambulance

After a standoff that lasted a couple of days, the Haryana Police on Wednesday night picked up self-styled ‘godman’ Sant Rampal from his ashram in Hisar. They have since moved him in an ambulance to Chandigarh.

Here are the latest developments:

2.30 pm: Ruling out any talks with ‘godman’ Rampal, authorities mounted pressure on him as sedition and other serious charges were slapped against him and several of his followers.

12:50 pm: At least six casualties have taken place so far. This morning bodies of four women were handed ‎over by the ashram to district administration of Hisar. Another woman came out of ashram this morning in a critical state. She was rushed to the hospital, but died during treatment. A child, 18 months old, has also died today morning.

12:45 pm: Those dead include, Savita, 31, resident of New Delhi, Santosh, 45, resident of Rohtak, Rajbala, 70, resident of Bijnaur, Malkit Kaur, 50, resident of Sangrur, Rajni, 20, resident of Uttar Pradesh and Dhairya (18 months old child), resident of Madhya Pradesh.

12:30 pm: Reports from the ground suggest thousands of followers of Rampal fleeing the ashram.

12:19 pm:  Police has slapped sedition and other charges against the controversial ‘godman’ and several of his followers that include officials of his Satlok Ashram.

10:40 am: Four more supporters confirmed dead.

10:22 am: Cops have confirmed two deaths so far. While a 26-year-old woman and an infant lost their lives, ashram spokesperson said that four more bodies were kept outside the premises, however, it was not clear whether these were dead or alive.

10:21 am: Several thousand supporters left this morning, but an equal number of supporters remained gathered there.

The supporters of “godman” Sant Rampal – many of them armed with guns and petrol bombs – are hunkered down in his ashram.

The security personnel are waiting to arrest Rampal and produce him in court, while his followers are determined to stop them.

All through Tuesday afternoon, security forces laid siege to the 12-acre ashram, forcibly removing supporters and tearing down walls and barricades with bulldozers. Rampal’s supporters retaliated with gunshots and crude fire bombs. A four-hour operation and several injuries later, Rampal was nowhere to be found. His supporters claimed he was never inside the ashram.
