Pod of small things

Masaba Gupta's line is fast becoming mature and is very retail friendly.

Have been watching some shows through live streaming of LFW TV and found nothing much to write home about after Masaba Gupta’s line, which is fast becoming mature and is very retail friendly.

For once I can understand what equality (inequality too for that matter) in celebrity means. With none of the fashion biggies showing at LFW,there are no big Bollywood stars walking the ramp either. LFW is both known and infamous for relying on cinema celebrities to attract media and foot fall; now it finds itself hurtled into a new grammar.

It is a new order of things,a generational shift too. Prateik walks for Masaba,Dia Mirza for Khushali Kumar, daughter of late music baron Gulshan Kumar and Anushka Manchanda cheers for Sapna Bhavnani. Don’t ask Sapna who? That’s the whole point.

Today,Vidya Prabhu of Express’s Mumbai fashion team and my colleague sent me these notes from the Grand Hyatt, the venue of LFW.

Over to Vidya:

The list of designers at this edition of the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) may seem lacklustre overall, but the good news is that the organisers have revamped the lobby outside the main show area.

It’s hard to miss the cloth and rope installations —right from the sewing machine to the rack with the Wendell Rodricks’ creations from his Biofach show that took place last month in Nuremberg,Germany.

Also, there is a window dressing concept at play here,as right next to the installations are mannequins advertising the creations of some of the participating designers.

Though everyone seems busy,a strong contender for the title of the busiest designer has to be designer Drashta Sarvaiya. Soon after she showed her glamorous line of tunics, coat dresses, jackets and jumpsuits,Sarvaiya was at her stall in the ‘Source’,getting her men to pack things up.

The reason,as we found out,was her show in France early this week. “I have been invited for a private showing of my line in Paris. I have to fly down this entire collection with me”,said an excited Sarvaiya. All the best,we say!

Among talent box shows on day one, that of Sapna Bhavnani and Sukriti Grover’s Sofake line attracted maximum footfall. Sapna’s friends—including singer Anushka Manchanda,TV personalities Purab Kohli and Mandira Bedi—cheered for Bhavnani as she sashayed down the mini-ramp in a black and white checkered flouncing gown to take a bow. Trust her to stick to her whackiness.
