A Prime Minister’s Rural Development Fellow was one of the four kidnapped by alleged CPI-Maoist cadres from a village in Giridih district on Saturday evening. Vamsi (23) was kidnapped by an armed, uniformed group of 12 men from Tuiyo panchayat’s Naukania village at 4.30 pm.
Village level worker Chandradev, gram rozgar sewak of NREGA Shambu Pandey and panchayat sewak Maksood Ansari were abducted along with Vamsi. Vamsi is from Andhra Pradesh and his surname and district of origin were unavailable.
Giridih district administration has not yet been able to notify his family.
The incident took place near a school in Naukania in Pirtand block. “They were at the school to organise a camp to collect applications for social security pensions and to do some NREGA work,” said Diprava Lakra, Deputy Commissioner of Giridih.
“At 4.30 pm, 12 Maoists came into the school and asked villagers to sit in a corner. They asked who the outsiders were. When panchayat officials introduced themselves, they asked whether anyone from the district was present. Then they took them all away after shouting pro-party slogans,” said Giridih SP Kranti Kumar Garhdeshi.
The district administration is yet to ascertain the reason for the kidnapping. “Maoists contacted neither me nor the DC. We do not know what they want,” said the SP. The driver was not abducted and has given a statement to police.
The DC said the village was not particularly inaccessible. “I have been there five times, the last time on January 14. An all-district team had a camp there on January 17, too,” said D C Lakra.
The two-year PMRDF scheme was started in April 2012 to send young people into backward districts to work with the district administration and improve delivery of government programmes.
