Congress on Tuesday said the Planning Commission of India should not be scrapped as the plan body has its own advantages. “I don’t think anybody can think of scrapping the planning commission. It has its own advantages,” Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad told reporters here.

He was replying to a question about media reports about scrapping of the Planning Commission. “It is just a newspaper report. So many things are coming and I don’t think all the things mentioned in most of the newspaper reports are true,” Azad said. He said the party will check on the issue during the forthcoming session of the Parliament.

“Now that Parliament session is coming up, we will get it checked up during the session,” he said. A report prepared by the Independent Evaluation Office (IEO), headed by Ajay Chhibber, has recommended that the Planning Commission be scrapped and replaced with the Reform and Solutions Commission.

Dear Sunitha,The only purpose the Planning Commission exists today is to author plans that are not followed based on advise from unwanted mandarins who have no touch with ground realities. The disbanding of the PC was suggested by a government committee during the Narasimha Rao regime, but could not be implemented as India was still transitioning from a top-heavy command economy to a semi-market based one that it is today, as well as political reasons. The commission has outlived its purpose and knows no better than to construct 50000$ toilets and rehabilitate sorry excuses for policymaking such as Montek Singh Alhuwalia, who's net contribution in the last 10 years has been negative. This is not the commission headed by luminaries such as Mahalanobis and Saha, but a bunch of worthless bureaucrats who have been kicked upstairs. Mr. Modi has taken the revolutionary step of being the first PM to not chair the planning commission, and not including it in presenting the budget. I believe that had the legendary and much underrated Mr. Narasimha Rao not been beleaguered by corruption charges brought about by his sons wrongdoings he would have taken this revolutionary step himself.Peace.

Its shameful that today we are thinking of sping Planning Commission , I am in total agreement with Mr. Azad it is a body which has taken to this country on development path this body has been greatly diluted by the Congress Government by putting retired IAS officers , other IAS , IFS,IRS, IRTS,and economic , Statistical service officers completely encroaching the positions of the Power, health, education, water , Agriculture and other domain experts since last ten years experts are being given no consideration in the commission . But we should realise that tax payers money in the form of Plan investment must go with proper thinking by experts other than the Ministry concerned or the State , it is working as a third party for our decisions . Development growth can be achieved if a common platform is there which decides intersectoral growth with domain experts under one roof. however the need is Planning commission experts should also visit the states and guide on ground or correct the process it is necessary to reinforce the commission with experts not by generalists.

We have so many obsolete laws and committees that are not keeping pace with society's/nation's needs of the day. Law should be dynamic not static for that many things need to be taken into consideration like sping, amending, introducing new better laws that is why the legislature is there. Upper houses in many states are of white elephants only as sanctuaries for unemplo, disgruntled politicians at the cost of tax payers money. So also pensions for elected guys with out proper study.
