The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday directed the Punjab government to place on record the report,in a sealed cover, prepared by former DGP Shashi Kant in regard to alleged drug mafia operations in the state.

In May,Kant had claimed he had sent a report to current Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini over a year ago, naming 185 jail officials, top 10 leaders and businessmen who were running the drug mafia in Punjab. He also said, since the report was sent through proper officials channels,a copy must be lying with the state home department, led by the Deputy Chief Minister. The report was submitted by Kant when he was ADGP (Intelligence).

The directions came on Tuesday when the HC was hearing a PIL filed by former convict Tarlochan Singh. A Mohali resident,he was lodged at the Ropar district jail when he filed the petition seeking an inquiry not only into the sale of intoxicants at the Ropar Jail “in connivance with jail officials”,but also their alleged highhandedness towards prisoners reporting the illegal activities. The case will now come up for hearing on September 10.
