Lauded by Congress for blowing the lid off the alleged bungling in the purchase of library books and science kits,Director General of School Education,Kahan Singh Pannu, was on Monday posted as secretary (Agriculture). He replaced V K Sharma.
Pannu had locked horns with Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka over the procurement process for school material under Sarv Sikhsha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhayamik Shiksha Abhiyan. A Central team had also visited Punjab last month to probe the alleged irregularities.
The officer courted yet another controversy when he was attacked by pilgrims while overseeing rescue operations in flood-hit Uttarakhand. The SAD-BJP government was forced to order a probe after a video footage of the assault went viral on YouTube.
The incident once again dragged the ministers name into a controversy,as a Bathinda resident Maluka too hails from the district was arrested for uploading the video. As the police made first few arrests,Pannu had proceeded on a leave. His transfer to the agriculture department comes at a time when the Congress had raised the pitch for Malukas dismissal following reports that the minister had been indicted by the Central probe team.
