Panchayat elections will be held on May 31: Minister

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Department Surjit Singh Rakhra on Tuesday said that while zila parishad and block samiti elections will be conducted in Punjab by May 15,panchayat elections will be held on May 31.

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Department Surjit Singh Rakhra on Tuesday said that while zila parishad and block samiti elections will be conducted in Punjab by May 15,panchayat elections will be held on May 31.

Maintaining that all preparations are complete for these elections,Rakhra said the department was preparing digital maps of villages and delimited wards to be uploaded on website of rural development and panchayat department by March 31 so that fair and smooth panchayat elections can be conducted in the state.

In a press communiqué,Rakhra said: “The state government has taken an initiative to conduct panchayat election through wardbandi. Work for wardbandi has been completed as per votes of the villages. A total 81,500 wards have been constituted. Digital maps of all villages are prepared and all wards are shown in these maps.”

He added that earlier,people used to face harassment at different offices while they wanted information of their wards.

“Therefore,the department has taken an initiative to prepare digital maps of villages and wards. Now,anyone can get information about their wards with just a click of a button,as information will be available on department’s website.”
