The number of runaway couples in Haryana, who were provided security on court orders, has witnessed a whopping 267.4 per cent increase in the last three years. The startling figures were revealed by the state government while replying to a question raised by Congress MLAs in the Assembly on the law and order situation.

In its reply, the government said that courts have ordered Haryana to provide police security to 366 runaway couples in 2010. The figure increased to 930 in 2011 and touched 1,345 in 2013. In the first month of 2013,various courts had ordered the government to provide security to 141 runaway couples.

“It has become a daily affair as in every part of the state. Women are being kidnapped and raped. People are murdered, looted and dacoities are taking place. I had even stated crime figures in my letter addressed to the CM. But his reply was shocking. He said that the state was peaceful…,” said Haryana Janhit Congress MLA Renuka Bishnoi said.

INLD MLA Rampal Majra also slammed the government of not being able to curb heinous crimes. “Women are scared to go out of their homes in the evening. The situation has not improved even after Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s visit to a Jind’s village where a minor girl immolated herself after being gangraped. Such instances are still happening in the state,” Majra said.

Replying to a question raised by Congress MLA Sampat Singh, the government stated that 5,161 proclaimed offenders are absconding. In the last three years, over 10,000 facing criminal charges, and released on bail, are yet to return.
