Orissa: 15 killed in train-jeep collision

Fifteen members of a marriage party,including the bride,were killed and another person critically injured when their vehicle was hit by a train at an unmanned level crossing at Dhanger near Bargarh.

Fifteen members of a marriage party,including the bride,were killed and another person critically injured when their vehicle was hit by a train at an unmanned level crossing at Dhanger near Bargarh.

The tragedy took place around 3.50 pm when the bride along with her family members were on their way to her in-law’s house in a jeep after wedding. The vehicle was hit by the Balangir-Puri inter-city Express while crossing the level crossing between Bargarh and Barpali railway stations,railway sources said.

The jeep,which got stuck to the train engine,was pushed 200 metre along the track and caught fire under the impact of the collision. The train engine was not affected by the fire.

Inspector in-charge of Bargarh police station U S Maharana confirmed death of 12 persons on the spot,while railway sources said three others later succumbed to injuries.

The dead included the bride Pinki Dehury (18) and the jeep driver. The bridegroom had left the marriage place at Kainser,18 km from the mishap site,for his house at Dhanger before the bride’s departure.

No one in the train was injured,the railway sources said.

Fire brigade was pressed into service immediately to douse the fire and the injured rushed to the VSS Medical College Hospital at Burla.
