CM Prithviraj Chavan prevailed over MPCC as it was decided Nandini Parvekar will contest the Yavatmal bypoll in Vidarbha on a Congress ticket.

The election has been necessitated by the death of her husband, young MLA Nilesh Parvekar,in a road accident in January. Nilesh,a popular leader, was part of the Rahul Gandhi youth brigade.

Sources in state Congress said,“MPCC president Manikrao Thakre was trying to push his son Rahul. However,Chavan felt they should promote Nandini as a tribute to Nilesh.” A majority of Congress leaders felt they should consider public sentiment in the constituency which was in favour of Nandini.

Victim’s father seeks CBI probe

Amarsingh, father of Delhi nursing graduate Preeti Rathi who was attacked with acid as the family got down at Bandra Terminus two weeks ago,has demanded a CBI probe.

Amarsingh is not satisfied with government railway police (GRP) investigation and believes the man arrested in Delhi last week is innocent.

“GRP has made no progress in the investigation and I am very unhappy with it. They have arrested the wrong man. I do not believe (Pawankumar Azadsingh) Gahalon is involved. It is 12 days since the attack but police have still not arrested the culprit. It is clear GRP cannot handle the investigation and I want CBI to take over,” he said.

“Gahalon is a nice boy who greeted me every time I passed. When he would visit his aunt,Preeti was away studying at Batra College. So there was no contact. Police picked him up after he called my younger daughter to expressed concern for Preeti. His parents have spoken to me and they are very upset,” Amarsingh said.

Preeti (25),who was to join Army Medical College in Colaba on May 2,suffered injuries to her face, neck and chest and is recuperating at Masina Hospital in Byculla.

On May 8,police arrested BTech student Gahalon (24) after Preeti said she had seen him at Nizamuddin Railway Station the day she left for Mumbai. Gahalon of Rohtak in Haryana was brought to Mumbai on May 9. He used to reportedly visit his aunt living in the same Narela locality as the Rathis.

Police said Gahalon resembled a man caught on CCTV camera fleeing Bandra Terminus on the day of the attack but are yet to establish his involvement in the crime.

Delhi University student Satyam, who was questioned last week, was given a clean chit by police after he proved he was in Delhi on attack day.

“CCTV footage shows Satyam was present in the chemistry laboratory at Delhi University on May 2,” said Vijay Dhopavkar, senior inspector,Bandra GRP.

GRP filed a petition before a magistrate Monday seeking to conduct a lie detector test on Gahalon. “But we can conduct the test only if Gahalon agrees,” said Dhopavkar.

Meanwhile,Masina Hospital director R B Dastur said: “Preeti drank some milk and coconut water Monday. Her internal burns have not healed and doctors do not want to take a chance by giving her a lot to drink or eat.”
