Mild showers in Ferozepur and Fazilka along with strong winds kept the authorities on toes on Tuesday as tonnes of paddy that arrived in the last few days at the grain markets is still lying in the open.

The administration claimed that things were under control, but they did not rule out major problems if it rained again as the mandis do not not have adequate quantity of waterproof sheets to cover the stock lying in the open.

Hours after the rain,Deputy Commissioner S Karuna Raju arrange for waterproof sheets at the mandis.

“As of now things are under control and we hope that it does not rain tomorrow because the stock is lying in open,” Raju said.

He,however, claimed that though the rice millers were not lifting the stock in most of the districts,“the situation is different here as of the total stock that arrived in various mandis more than 47% has been lifted.” Till now 3.08 lakh quintal paddy has been lifted.

Ferozepur (rural) MLA,Joginder Singh Jindu, sought to take the credit for the better lifting of paddy. “We did ground work better and hence problem is less in our district. We are at number one in the state in terms of lifting of the paddy stock,” he said.
