A man on Wednesday shot at his 55-year-old mother four times in Madina village at Rohtak’s Meham town.

Though the exact motive is not yet clear, preliminary investigations conducted by the police revealed that Devi,a widow, had multiple disputes with her son Dashrath (22) and thus,he wanted to kill her. Following the incident, the woman was rushed by her relatives to Rohtak’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, where her condition is stated to be serious.

The incident took place around 5 am when Devi was sleeping at her parents’ house in Madina. She had been living with her parents for the last three months, while her elder son Dashrath had been living at her residence at Behrana in Jhajjar. Her younger son studies in a college in Rajasthan.

According to the police,Devi and Dashrath had developed a rift over two major issues — transfer of a chunk of the family land in his name and his relationship with a girl which Devi was not ready to accept.

“Dashrath had developed a habit of arguing and attacking his mother. Her husband had died a few years ago and ever since, she was dependent on her two sons. When Dashrath started ill treating her,she left her home and started living with her parents in Madina,” said a police officer.

SHO Narinder Kumar of Meham police station added: “This morning, while she was asleep,Dashrath and one of his friends reached Madina. Dashrath fired four shots at his mother from point blank range. Dashrath and his accomplice escaped. Villagers rushed Devi to hospital and informed us. We have registered a case against Dashrath,” he said.

The police said Devi’s condition was critical.
