The condition of Deepak Karma, the son of Congress leader the late Mahendra Karma, is critical after a snake bit him at his Faraspal village in Dantewada Sunday morning. Deepak, 36, was taken to the district hospital from where he was referred to Raipur. He was later brought to the state capital in an ambulance and admitted to a private hospital.
Deepak, along with his mother and three younger brothers, enjoys Z-plus security. A substantial contingent of security forces always remains stationed at his Faraspal home and a Road Opening Party is deployed to secure his travel in interior Dantewada.
The incident once again underlines the poor state of health facilities in Bastar, a region bigger than Kerala, which sees many deaths due to snakebite every year. There was no treatment available for Deepak in the entire zone and he had to be taken to capital Raipur, around 450 km from his village.
The incident comes nearly a year after his father was killed by Maoists on May 25 in Darbha last year. His mother Devti Karma contested and won the 2013 Assembly elections from Dantewada, but Deepak, who was the Congress candidate from Bastar Lok Sabha seat, lost to the BJP.
