Lineman’s death sparks protest

Major traffic disruption was witnessed on the GT road in Haryana’s Karnal district on Monday with power linemen blocking the road after a colleague died while repairing a transmission line.

Major traffic disruption was witnessed on the GT road in Haryana’s Karnal district on Monday with power linemen blocking the road after a colleague died while repairing a transmission line.

The deceased,Deepak (35),was electrocuted on April 16. He and was referred to PGIMER in Chandigarh,where he died on Monday. Following his death,the workers blocked the national highway for three hours and traffic had to be diverted to alternate routes. The blockade was finally lifted in after the police assured the protesters that those responsible for the electrocution will be arrested.

“On April 13,a power house at Amin village in Kurukshetra received information that a 11-KV line had snapped. A team of electricity linemen led by Deepak climbed the tower and started repair work. Three others remained on the ground. After about 10 minutes,Deepak received a shock,fell off the pole and was injured. He was rushed to Kurukshetra hospital,from where he was referred to PGIMER in a critical condition,” a Karnal district police spokesperson said.

Deepak’s statement was recorded on April 16 and a case registered against unidentified officials of the electricity department. He died on Monday.

The spokesperson said: “On April 20,we had asked electricity department officials to fix responsibility of the officials who were found negligent in performing their duties,leading to the incident. The department informed us that a probe committee has been constituted to probe the incident. On April 22,the department informed it has sent some equipment for testing at a Panchkula,following which,officials will be able to fix responsibility.”
