Senior Punjab Congress leader SRS Lalli Majithia on Tuesday alleged that the BJP and state Health Minister Madan Mohan Mittal had deprived 9.19 lakh people in 761 villages of specialist medical facilities to consolidate their urban voters in Amritsar district.

“The plight of two partners in this coalition government (SAD-BJP combine) is that the right hand does not know what the left is doing. On one hand Mittal is withdrawing specialists and on the other,as per news reports, the government is building 10 community health centres of international standards at a cost of Rs 50.38 crore. One with common sense will fail to understand as to why the Punjab government has not thought of upgrading 80 CHCs,from where it has withdrawn specialists,to international standards,” Majithia said at a press conference here.

He further alleged that the ‘closing of 80 CHCs by the health minister’ has rendered infrastructure worth nearly

Rs 250 crore useless.

“The government has deprived the rural population of specialist medical aid. Now those requiring immediate medical help in rural areas will have to travel more than 30 to 40 km,which will ultimately lead to increased mortality rate in women, children and general patients. They will have to arrange their own vehicles at exorbitant rates as Ambulance 108 will cater to only trauma victims and pregnant women,” Majithia said.

Mittal was not available for comment. A man identifying himself as the minister’s PA said the BJP leader was busy in a meeting in Chandigarh.
