Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena activists in Kolhapur went on a rampage on Tuesday,attacking migrants from North India,after a 30-year-old labourer from Jharkhand was arrested for allegedly raping a one-year-old girl. Police have registered at least six cases across the district.

The incident of rape occurred on Monday evening,following which accused Rajesh Singh was arrested by the Laxmipuri police and was remanded in police custody till August 19,said Assistant Police Inspector Santosh Bhandare.

The victim’s father works at a marriage hall in Laxmipuri as a security guard,and stays with his family nearby. Singh,who worked as a daily-wage labourer,allegedly abducted the child and took her to a public toilet and raped her. Locals heard the child’s cries and raised an alarm. The accused was arrested immediately.

“The child was bleeding and was taken to the hospital immediately,where rape was confirmed,” said SP,Kolhapur,Vijay Singh Jadhav. Angered by the incident,people came out on the streets. “The victim belongs to a local family and the accused is from Jharkhand. The situation got tense for a while,but was brought under control,” Jadhav said.
