After not finding their names in the list of 15 sportspersons recommended for the Arjuna awards, 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalists in boxing – Manoj Kumar and Paramjit Samota – have cried foul. The Arjuna awards committee forwarded the name of boxer Jai Bhagwan, a bronze-medal winner at the Delhi CWG, who has not been part of the national camp since 2012. Bhagwan has also not participated in competitions in nearly two years.

“The last time my name was ignored as Kavita Goyat got the award. This year I am shocked that the committee chose someone who is not in the national camp and only won a bronze medal at the 2010 CWG, while I won the gold medal at the same edition of the Games. I will protest this decision and I will file a RTI regarding this,” Kumar said. Kumar reached the quarterfinals at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and was in the last-eight stage at the 2011 World Championship, London Olympics and the 2013 World Championships held in Kazakhstan.

‘Loss of words

Samota has been the national champion seven times while Bhagwan has never won the title. “I am at a loss of words to explain this. They told us that the performance of the past four years will count. I have won more medals as compared to Bhagwan. I became the Commonwealth Games champion and also won the bronze medal in Asian Games apart from being the seven-time national champion, I will meet the sports minister and raise my objection,” Samota said.
