Kashmir’s top hospital lacks basic infrastructure

In the valley’s biggest hospital not only the cardiology,gastro enterology,nephrology and endocrinology wards in but a score of other major faculty like cardio vascular thoracic surgery (CVTS),urology,radiation oncology,neurology,neurosurgery and pediatric surgery is running short of basic medicare to help patients fight their disease.

The Cardio Vascular thoracic surgery,the ward 1A of the hospital is short of basic drugs like Voveran (pain killer),buscopan(anti spasmodic),dexmethasone(steroid),ciprofloxacin an antibiotic,albendazole(de-worm agent). The ward is also short of blood pressure monitoring machines,rubber gloves,urine bags and weighing machine.

The Neurosurgery ward is short of basic equipment like blood pressure apparatus and lumbar drainage kit. The nurse said that they are also short of antibiotics like ceftriaxone.

The General Surgery ward has no glucometer for the glucose monitoring of diabetic patients,who are admitted there. “We have to wait for the glucose results as the ward doesn’t have glucometer which gives instant results,” said an attendant Gulzar Ahmed Khan.

Ward 4,Urology and Surgical Gastroenterology has no Blood Pressure apparatus. The patients have to buy every medicine from the market as the ward is short of the supply of commonly needed drugs. “I have to buy a pain killer like voveran from the market,” said an attendant,Abdul Ahad. The ward is also short of B-complex tablets,glucometer (for glucose monitoring),rubber gloves,disposable gloves,urine bags,vitamin K injection (for liver support),Catheter – a tube that is inserted into a body cavity to drain off fluids.

The officials in the ward said that they are short of medicines like ceftriaxone,which is an antibiotic in cephalosporin group,and augmentin. “We also face severe shortage of pain killers,” he said. “We need blood pressure monitoring equipment. There was one BP apparatus in the ward which is out of order. These are basic requirements. We have shortage of everything,” the official said.

The patients complain of poor facilities. From ward 1 to 7,the attendants have to buy products like a urine bag or latex gloves themselves as the hospital is facing serious shortage of supplies. In fact,Altaf Ahmad,who was attending his ailing brother,said he bought a urine bag from the market. “We have to buy every medicine from the market but now they don’t even have urine bags here”.

Ward 5 – the Radiation Oncology Ward has serious shortage of Ondestron(antiemetic) – an essential drug for vomiting and nausea for patients undergoing Chemotherapy- Voveran and Tramadol (pain killer).

The officials said that the Ward is lacking a Neubiliser – an apparatus needed for patients undergoing chemotherapy. “We have only one Neubiliser for the whole ward,” an official said.

Ward 6: Neurology Ward is even short of cotton. “This ward is short of everything,” an official said. “There is nothing available here and patients have to purchase everything from the market”.
