Tension prevails over the city of Shivamogga, 300 km from Bangalore, since the death of a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted. The girl, a Class VIII student, was on her way to school on October 29 when she was allegedly abducted.

She was found abandoned on the side of a road with multiple scars on her body and died at the Kasturba Medical College hospital in Manipal on October 30. She had allegedly been forced to consume poison. A bandh was called in Shivamogga on Saturday to protest the death of the girl.

The girl was on her way to school when a car allegedly pulled up next to her asking for directions. As she approached the vehicle she was pulled in. “While the vehicle was on the move the girl was sexually assaulted and later forced to drink some toxic substance. She was later thrown by the side of the road,” Shivamogga SP Kaushalendra Kumar said quoting from the victim’s statement.

Locals who spotted the girl reportedly came to her rescue. She was identified by her belongings and her parents were contacted. According to Shivamogga SP, the police are awaiting a post-mortem report. The victim reportedly revealed the identity of one of the suspects to her mother before her death. “The person is known to the family and we have asked our officers to keep a lookout,” Kaushalendra Kumar said.
