The Jalandhar police on Wednesday booked a foreigner — allegedly a barrister based at Togo in Africa — in a case of fraud for asking BJP MLA Manoranjan Kalia to inherit the property of an engineer and later share it with him. The reason: Kalia shared the same surname with the deceased.

The deceased,M B Kalia, has allegedly left behind property worth six million dollars. On September 16,one Joseph Abiko,a barrister from Togo, had emailed the BJP MLA stating that the engineer had died in a road accident along with his wife and daughter and has no heirs. “I received two calls from Joseph Abiko on September 16 on my cellphone. The man told me that he is a barrister and asked me to inherit the property. He said that he will send me a detailed mail regarding this. The man called from the number +22891160915 and emailed me from ‘barr2aj@gmail.com’,” said Kalia.

He added: “Later,he sent me an SMS to say that he has emailed me. Since I was out of station,I saw a mail on September 17.”

The caller, who claimed to be the personal attorney of the deceased, told the BJP MLA that as his surname was also Kalia,he will forward his name for the purpose of inheriting the engineer’s property. He also asked for some documents from the BJP leader and said after inheriting the property, they will share the amount. “I have given a copy of the email to the police to investigate how the caller got my name and email address… I do not know anyone by the name of M B Kalia,” said the MLA.

When contacted,ACP Naresh Dogra said: “A case has been registered under the IPC and under Information Act against the caller.”
