A J&K Police officer was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl at her Deesu village residence in South Kashmir’s Kokernag district on Tuesday.

The incident triggered protests in the area on Wednesday and also led to clashes between the local residents and security personnel.

Police have registered a case against accused Inspector Ejaz Ahmad Shah who was posted in the district police lines in Kulgam. He was arrested on charges of attempt to rape, officials said.

“The girl’s father had earlier invited Shah to their house for tea. On Wednesday, when the officer paid a visit to their house, the girl and her mother were present but her father was absent,” a local resident told The Indian Express and added that, “Later, the matter came to light when the neighbours heard the girl screaming and rushed to the house,”

Another villager Ali Mohammed said the accused was arrested after the victim’s father informed police about the attack. “The police officer was arrested only after the DSP and SSP came to know that he had molested the girl,” he said.

Police said Shah was on a personal visit to the village and was on a leave from the office. “He has been arrested and placed under suspension after the incident,” IGP Kashmir, Abdul Ghani Mir told The Indian Express. “The department will take stringent action against the officer,” he added.
