Unable to bear the “daily humiliation in the society” and failing to get any substantial help from police over their missing daughter, who was a rape victim,a Dalit family in Haryana’s Hisar district Monday attempted suicide, leaving two dead and three others in a critical condition.

While the 38-year-old mother of the rape victim and her 13-year-old sister were declared dead by doctors, the father and two brothers, aged 11 and nine, were admitted to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak in a critical condition.

Police officials said that the family had consumed poison in their house in village Bheri Akbarpur near Uklana town and were found by fellow villagers Monday morning.

In his statement before the Magistrate, the father accused Haryana police for not being able to locate his 17-year-old missing daughter.

His daughter was allegedly abducted and raped in May last year by Rohtash,a resident of Ramniwas Kalan village in Hisar. The family lodged a complaint with the police on May 18 and Rohtash was arrested. He is lodged in Hisar jail. The victim girl, however, could not recover from the trauma and went missing in June

In his statement before the Magistrate,Mahender added that his entire family was facing a lot of humiliation because of his daughter’s rape. He said that the family entered into a suicide pact as police was harassing them for the past nearly one year since their teenaged daughter went missing after her rape. He alleged that while his daughter had gone missing in June, last year, the police registered his complaint this year in February.

The father, who works as a labourer, said that they were forced to take the step to end their misery owing to the humiliation and poverty. He said that police had been questioning him and his family on the whereabouts of their missing daughter.

However,Sub-Inspector Jai Kishan,Station House Officer,Uklana police station,Hisar, said,“We had registered a case on his complaint last year. The accused who allegedly raped his daughter was arrested and is still in jail. Now,the rape victim has gone missing and adequate efforts were being made to locate her. It is very unfortunate that the family has taken this extreme step.”

The rape case trial is on in a Fast Track court in Hisar, but the victim’s statement was yet to be recorded. The court had asked the Haryana police to submit a status report on April 30 – the next hearing of the case.

The police said that inquest proceedings have been initiated in the matter.
