Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Thursday warned the SAD against misusing the police in unleashing vendetta against Congress workers and leaders.

“Illegal detention of three prominent Congress workers, who were later released by the warrant officer appointed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, only vindicated the Congress stand that the Akalis were resorting to vendetta against party workers,” said Amarinder.

He added that the three workers — Balkar Singh,Sukhdev Singh and Daljeet Singh — were illegally detained just because they had refused to support the Akali Dal in the recently concluded block samiti and zila parishad elections.

“There had been dozens of incidents where Congress workers were summoned to the police station at the behest of Akali jathedars.

“They were arm twisted, humiliated and forced into submission. Wherever Congress workers declined to succumb to intimidation, they were slapped with false cases,” said the former Congress party chief.

He added: “Three-and-a-half years (next Assembly elections) is not a long time and they will have to account for their sins.

The Congress will not tolerate such intimidation of its workers and resist all such attempts lock stock and barrel.”
