The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Monday imposed a complete ban on animal sacrifices during religious ceremonies and at places of worship, saying compassion was “basic tenets in all the religions” and that the practice was “a social evil and is required to be curbed”.
A division bench comprising Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Sureshwar Thakur passed the order on a PIL alleging that thousands of animals were sacrificed every year in the name of religion in Himachal Pradesh and seeking judicial intervention to stop the practice .
“The innocent animals cannot be permitted to be sacrificed to appease the God or deity in a barbaric manner. Compassion is basic tenets in all the religions. The practice of animal sacrifice is a social evil and is required to be curbed,” the court said.
