Two national-level wrestlers have filed an amended petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging denial of admission to Phd by Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU). The decision to not offer Phd seats to the two was first taken by the Vice Chancellor and later endorsed by the Academic Council.

Following the amended petition filed by the two wrestlers, the high court on Tuesday issued notices to the University and its Vice-Chancellor.

The wrestlers,Naveen Singh and Sandeep Kumar, have challenged the decision of the Academic Council stating that the Council has merely endorsed the Vice-Chancellor’s decision. The reason given for their decision was that the two could not be allowed to enrol for Phd till a clean chit is given to the CMJ University,Shillong, from where the two completed their Master’s.

The University (CMJ) had recently come under scanner of University Grants Commission (UGC) in June this year for committing several irregularities.

The two had petitioned the High Court a fortnight back seeking directions to MDU to allow them to pursue their academic ambitions by pursuing Phd degree in the field of physical education. Taking stock of the “fake” degrees awarded by CMJ University, the Vice Chancellor of MDU had issued a letter that admissions of students who had obtained degrees from CMJ will remain suspended.
